This is a work dedicated to my dear piano teacher, Niina Ranta. At the same time, it’s also something I thought about while writing my debut novel, where the main character is a fallen mermaid. This piece is heavily story-focused for me, and follows the journey of a lone mermaid swimming to the surface.

I imagine the unterwater oceans as a meditative, lonely places to live. They are full of glistening beauty, creatures unknown to us humans, and worlds yet to be discovered. Yet it is quiet. Eerily quiet. Isolated, even. So I’d imagine the mermaid is perhaps last of her kind, hiding from our gazes, swimming to catch glimpses of what maybe was or could’ve been in her world.
