A storm. You are boarding a ship that will take you far away from your past life. Once you go, you cannot return. But this is not about literally leaving a place. This is about leaving behind a person. Someone you cannot say farewell to. And only once you’ve already left, once the sails are hoisted and you are finally free – only then can you let yourself break apart.

During the course of this piece, the storm will slowly rise and eventually settle into a faint sunshine. The singer of this work is advised to almost “act” the role.

This is technically the second part of the 2-part work, “Syrjäiset laulut” (Secluded Songs). I wrote the original poem for my poetry book “The Garden of Stars” in the year 2024. However, the instrumentation differs a bit as seen here:

INSTRUMENTATION: Violin 1, Violin 2, Viola, Cello, Clarinet, Voice (Soprano). It would be advised to play this with a double string quartet or a small string orchestra.

The Finnish Poem:

Purje nousee. Merten vaahtoon
hän surmauttaa jäähyväisensä.
Aallonharjoille tihkuvat kyyneleet,
syvänpimeät ja harmaat –
kaikki täällä on siitä itkusta,
joka laine on murtuva nyyhkäys.
Ja myrsky!
Se huudetaan henkiin –
halkaisevasta surusta.

The English translation:

The sail is hoisted. In the seafoam
she lets her farewells be slain.
Onto the wave crests fall tears,
pitch-dark and gray –
all within is of that weeping,
every wave is a faltering cry.
And the storm!
It’s yelled into life –
from splitting grief.
