I was incredibly afraid of death as a child, so afraid I couldn’t sleep sometimes. It was something the adults were afraid of too, and they couldn’t explain why we had to die. I decided the best way to cope with the fear was to stop thinking about death completely. Then, when I was 15 years old, I found Katri Vala’s poem “Kukkiva maa” in a school textbook. It completely changed something inside me. This idea, that “yes, we will wither and die, but so what? So what! Who cares!” was so powerful that it erased my fears. Years later, a member of the vocal ensemble Valve asked me to compose my first piece for vocal ensemble, so I chose this poem. It has been amongst the audience favourites for a while, and it is one of my personal favourites too. Thank you, Katri Vala, for writing this poem – from the bottom of my heart!
